PRAMILAJI BHIKSHA – A SEVA

Among the many values in the Hindu heritage impressed upon us, gratefulness to our Guru is the foremost.  Gurudakshina is a very important aspect in our pursuit of the learning of the scriptures.  The Virginia Springfield Chapter’s means of building this affiliation with our Acharya is with the Sunday lunch bhiksha program.  This is a wonderful opportunity to have Acharya Pramilaji grace your home and to spend time with you, your family, and friends.  This will be a special time for all of you with Pramilaji.  Your children and guests will feel special to have Pramilaji's undivided attention and you will have quality time with Pramilaji in a quiet setting.  Additionally, this is an also an opportunity to participate in Seva for Chinmaya Mission.

Listed below are some general guidelines to help you in preparing for the bhiksha:

  • To sign up for the bhiksha, contact the bhiksha coordinator.
  • One week or so before the bhiksha date, Pramilaji would like to meet with, if possible, all members of your family at the center.
  • You can invite any friends or family (CM members or not) to the lunch bhiksha.
  • Bring two sets of directions printed in BOLD and Larger font to give to Pramilaji on the day of the bhiksha
      • First set should have directions from Springfield high school to your home.
      • Second set should have directions from your home to Pramilaji’s home.  Her home address is 1314 Towlston Road, Vienna VA 22182.
      • Both sheets should contain the home phone number of the host, and cell numbers of both host and hostess (just in case the directions are not clear).

  •   After reciting Brahmaarpanam, Pramilaji and everyone present eat together.
  • If you are not able to do the bhiksha on your scheduled day due to unforeseen circumstances, please let the bhiksha coordinator know as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made.
  • There is no specific suggested bhiksha contribution.  However, if you would like to donate, please make the donation checks payable to CMWRC.  In the note section, please put “Pramilaji Bhiksha”.

  • What to cook?
  1. Please avoid garlic completely.  Onion in minimal quantities is OK.
  2. No eggs or meat.
  3. Food should not be too spicy or greasy.
  4. You can do all the prep work the night before.  Please cook the food on the bhiksha day.
  5. Please keep the menu as simple as you want.

Chinmaya Mission Pledge

We stand as one family
Bound to each other with love and respect.
We serve as an army
Courageous and disciplined
Ever ready to fight against all low tendencies
And false values, within and without us.
We live honestly
The noble life of sacrifice and service
Producing more than what we consume
And giving more than what we take.
We seek the Lord’s grace
To keep us on the path of virtue, courage and wisdom.
May Thy grace and blessings flow through us
To the world around us.
We believe that the service of our country
Is the service of the Lord of lords
And devotion to the people
Is devotion to the Supreme Self.
We know our responsibilities
Give us the ability and courage to fulfill them.
